WISSA FAQ

Why was Fond du Lac Wisconsin in the US selected for the 2015 WISSA World Ice and Snow Sailing Championship?

It's all about the wind!

For sailors and kiters Fond du Lac Wisconsin is the ideal base-camp and Lake Winnebago is a windy destination not to be missed!

Fond du Lac is located at the foot of Lake Winnebago one of the largest lakes in the U.S. The lake and our community are also at the base of a geological formation called the Niagara Escarpment. This is a nearly 1,000-mile-long cliff that begins near Lake Winnebago, runs through Canada and ends in Upstate New York. The Niagara Escarpment is responsible for the Niagara Falls in New York; it is also responsible for the incredible nearly constant flow of wind that blows down onto Lake Winnebago.

Recently featured as one of the best windkiting destinations in the U.S. by TRAVEL+ LEISURE Magazine, Fond du Lac Wisconsin is a favorite for many in the kiting community.

In addition to being a great kiting destination, visitors will also find plenty of restaurants, bars, shops and very friendly people. Our charming town is centrally located in the heart of the US’s Midwest and is easy to reach by auto or by air. Fond du Lac is just under an hour’s drive away from Milwaukee Wisconsin’s Mitchell International Airport and two hours away from Chicago Illinois’ O'Hare International Airport...

What will I need to know about VISA’s if I am traveling from oversees to the U.S.?

This is an extremely important question and one that must be addressed in a timely matter for those competitors visiting from abroad.

Many non-U.S. citizens need a VISA to enter the United States to visit. A VISA allows a foreign citizen to travel to a U.S. port-of-entry (generally an airport) and request permission to enter the United States. A VISA does not guarantee entry into the United States. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials at the port-of-entry have authority to permit or deny admission to the United States.
