Lake Winnebago
Lake Winnebago, where competitors will battle it out for supremacy of the ice during the 2015 WISSA World Ice and Snow Sailing Championship, is a massive body of water. In fact it is one of the largest lakes in the U.S. Add to this fact, the natural phenomenon of the nearly constant flow of wind onto Lake Winnebago from the nearby Niagara Escarpment and you have a kiters dream.
Fond du Lac (loosely translated into foot of the lake) is nestled into the southernmost shore of Lake Winnebago. The community embraces the recreational opportunities the water provides year round. Sailing, windsurfing and open water fishing are dominant activities much of the year. When winter rolls around ice fishing, sturgeon spearing and, of course, wind and kite surfing all take center stage.
